Getting to Zero is a comprehensive initiative approved by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors that seeks to eliminate all new HIV infections in San Diego County within 10 years.

The initiative aims to increase public awareness of HIV and embolden countywide prevention efforts by setting clear goals, encouraging collaboration between local organizations and health care providers and pursuing policy changes that support HIV eradication efforts.

The Getting to Zero initiative is comprised of three primary strategies to help end the epidemic:

  • Get Tested for HIV
  • Get Treated for HIV
  • Prevent HIV

One out of every 10 County residents living with HIV is unaware of their status.

Everyone should be tested for HIV at least once in their lifetime, and more frequently if they have ongoing risk. While HIV testing is already free and widely available throughout San Diego County, Getting to Zero seeks to ensure HIV testing is offered during all routine doctor visits.

Get Tested

Over one-third of County residents living with HIV have not been successfully treated for HIV.

People who are in treatment for HIV can often expect to live long, healthy lives. Additionally, people who are successfully treated are highly unlikely to transmit HIV to anyone else. HIV treatment is available to every resident of the County who is living with HIV.

Get Treated

HIV infection is 100% preventable

Education and behavioral interventions have been shown to be effective in preventing new HIV infections. Additionally, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a HIV prevention tool for HIV negative individuals that involves taking medication once a day that can reduce the chance of getting HIV by up to 99%. HIV education and prevention activities, including navigation assistance for obtaining PrEP, are available throughout San Diego County.
